Life
John of God (1495-1550) was born in Portugal and worked as a soldier and bookseller in Spain before a dramatic conversion after hearing John of Avila preach. He devoted the rest of his life to caring for the sick and poor of Granada, founding a hospital renowned for its humane treatment of patients. His followers formed the Brothers Hospitallers, and he is a patron of hospitals and the sick.
