Saints Cornelius and Cyprian

Life
Cornelius was Pope during a period of controversy over readmitting Christians who had lapsed under persecution; exiled by Emperor Gallus, he died at Centumcellae in 253. Cyprian, the influential Bishop of Carthage and a Latin Father of the Church, corresponded with and supported him, and was beheaded in 258 under Valerian. Named together in the Roman Canon, the two are honored on September 16.
