Cosmas and Damian were twin brothers and physicians of Arabian origin who treated the sick without charge, earning the title holy unmercenaries. They were martyred during the Diocletian persecution in the early fourth century. Named in the Roman Canon of the Mass, they are venerated as patrons of physicians, surgeons, and pharmacists.
