Life
Lawrence Ruiz, a layman from Manila and father of three, was martyred in Nagasaki, Japan, in 1637 with fifteen companions, including Dominican missionaries, for refusing to renounce the Christian faith. Canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1987, he is the first Filipino saint and is venerated as a patron of the Philippines.
