Holy Thursday, also called Maundy Thursday, commemorates the Last Supper, at which Jesus instituted the Eucharist and the priesthood and washed the feet of his apostles as a sign of humble service. Its evening Mass of the Lord's Supper opens the Sacred Triduum, the three holiest days of the Christian year, and ends with the transfer of the Blessed Sacrament to the altar of repose.
