Life
Anselm was born in Aosta, Italy, around 1033 and became a Benedictine monk and abbot of Bec in Normandy before serving as Archbishop of Canterbury from 1093 to 1109. A Doctor of the Church called the Father of Scholasticism, he framed theology as faith seeking understanding, formulating the ontological argument for God's existence and, in Cur Deus Homo, the satisfaction theory of the atonement.
