Life
Martin I was a seventh-century pope and the last pope venerated as a martyr. In 649 he convened the Lateran Council, which condemned the Monothelite heresy. For this defiance he was arrested by Emperor Constans II, taken to Constantinople, and exiled to Cherson in the Crimea, where he died in 655 from the hardships and neglect of his captivity.
