Solemnity

Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Feast day
December 08

Life

This solemnity celebrates the dogma that the Blessed Virgin Mary, from the first moment of her conception, was preserved free from original sin by a singular grace of God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ. Pope Pius IX solemnly defined the dogma in 1854 in the bull Ineffabilis Deus. Under this title Mary is the patronal saint of the United States.
