Life
John of the Cross (1542-1591) was a Spanish Carmelite friar, mystic, and Doctor of the Church who joined Saint Teresa of Avila in reforming the Carmelite Order. Imprisoned for his efforts, he composed poetry of luminous beauty; his writings on the dark night of the soul are masterpieces of mystical literature. Patron of mystics, his feast is December 14.
