Life
John Damascene (c. 675-749) was a Syrian monk, priest, and Doctor of the Church who lived at the monastery of Mar Saba near Jerusalem. During the Iconoclast controversy he wrote influential defenses of the veneration of sacred images, and his compendium The Fount of Knowledge summarized centuries of Greek theology. He is a patron of icon painters.
