Life
Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin (1474-1548) was an indigenous Mexican convert to whom the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared at Tepeyac hill near Mexico City in 1531 as Our Lady of Guadalupe. His tilma, bearing her miraculous image, remains enshrined in the Basilica of Guadalupe. Canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2002, he is honored as a patron of indigenous peoples.
