Life
Damasus I, pope from 366 to 384, commissioned his secretary Saint Jerome to revise the Latin text of the Bible, a work that grew into the Vulgate. He promoted the veneration of the martyrs, restoring the Roman catacombs and adorning them with verse inscriptions he composed himself, and fostered the use of Latin as the principal liturgical language of Rome.
