Life
Apollinaris was the first Bishop of Ravenna in Italy, traditionally said to have come from Antioch in Syria as a disciple of Saint Peter. According to tradition he preached the Gospel there for many years, suffering repeated persecution, beatings, and exile for the faith, and he is venerated as a martyr. The sixth-century basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe near Ravenna preserves his memory.
