Life
Born in 1656 to a Mohawk father and Algonquin mother, Kateri Tekakwitha embraced Christianity and, despite persecution from her tribe, lived a life of remarkable prayer, penance, and charity until her death on April 17, 1680. Canonized in 2012 as the first Native American saint, she is patron of ecology and Native Americans, honored on July 14.
