Life
Augustine was prior of a Benedictine monastery in Rome when Pope Gregory the Great sent him with a band of monks to evangelize the Anglo-Saxons in 596. Landing in Kent in 597, he converted King Ethelbert and established his see at Canterbury, becoming its first archbishop. Known as the Apostle to the English, he died around 604 and is venerated as a patron of England.
