Life
Damien de Veuster was born in Belgium in 1840 and joined the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts, which sent him as a missionary to Hawaii. In 1873 he volunteered to serve the leprosy settlement on Molokai, where he built churches, homes, and community life for the exiled patients for sixteen years until he himself contracted the disease and died in 1889. He was canonized in 2009.
