Life
Nereus and Achilleus were early Roman martyrs buried in the cemetery of Domitilla on the Via Ardeatina. According to an epitaph by Pope Damasus, they were soldiers who converted to Christianity, laid down their arms, and accepted death rather than continue in imperial service. Tradition places their martyrdom during the persecution of Diocletian, and a Roman basilica bears their names.
