Life

Bede (c. 673-735) entered the monastery of Wearmouth-Jarrow in Northumbria as a boy and spent nearly his entire life there, devoted to scripture, teaching, and writing. His Ecclesiastical History of the English People, completed in 731, earned him the title Father of English History. Declared a Doctor of the Church in 1899, he is a patron of English writers and historians.
