Benedict of Nursia (c. 480-547) founded the Benedictine Order and wrote the Rule of Saint Benedict, whose motto 'ora et labora' balanced prayer with work. It became the foundation of Western monasticism and profoundly shaped European civilization, earning him renown as patron of Europe and of monks. His memorial falls on July 11.
