Life
A Dominican tertiary and mystic, Catherine of Siena counseled popes and princes despite little formal schooling. She helped persuade Pope Gregory XI to return the papacy from Avignon to Rome and recorded her visions in the Dialogue. Named a Doctor of the Church and co-patroness of Italy and Europe, she died at thirty-three and is honored each April 29.
