Life
George was a Roman soldier of Palestinian origin who was martyred at Lydda during the persecution of Diocletian in the early fourth century. Venerated in the East as a Great Martyr, he became one of the most popular saints in both Eastern and Western Christianity, later associated with the medieval legend of the dragon. He is the patron of England and of soldiers.
