A Basque nobleman and soldier, Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556) underwent a profound conversion while recovering from a battlefield wound, then founded the Society of Jesus, the Jesuits. His Spiritual Exercises remain one of the most influential guides to discernment and prayer. Patron of soldiers and retreats, he is honored on July 31.
