Life
James the Greater, a son of Zebedee and brother of John, was among the three apostles closest to Jesus, present at the Transfiguration and in Gethsemane. He became the first apostle martyred, beheaded by Herod Agrippa I in Jerusalem in 44. Venerated at Santiago de Compostela, he is patron of Spain and pilgrims, honored on July 25.
