Life

A priest of Reims who gave away his wealth to serve the poor, John Baptist de la Salle founded the Brothers of the Christian Schools. He transformed education by teaching in the vernacular, grouping students by ability, and training teachers professionally, pioneering methods still in use today. Declared patron of teachers, this reformer of schooling is honored each April 7.
