Life
Junipero Serra (1713-1784) was a Franciscan friar born on the island of Majorca, Spain, who left a university career teaching philosophy to become a missionary in the Americas. He founded nine of the twenty-one Spanish missions in California, playing a central role in the evangelization of the western coast of North America. He was canonized by Pope Francis in 2015.
