Life

Lawrence of Brindisi (1559-1619) was an Italian Capuchin friar and Doctor of the Church who mastered Hebrew, Greek, and several modern languages. A brilliant preacher and biblical scholar, he served as a diplomat and military chaplain with imperial troops against the Ottoman Turks and led his order as minister general. He preached tirelessly against the Protestant Reformation and was canonized in 1881.
