Life
Matthias was chosen by lot to replace Judas Iscariot among the Twelve Apostles, as recorded in the Acts of the Apostles, and had followed Christ since his baptism by John. Tradition holds he preached the Gospel in Judea and Ethiopia, where he was martyred. Patron of alcoholics and carpenters, his feast falls on May 14.
