Life
Nicholas was a fourth-century bishop of Myra in Asia Minor, in present-day Turkey, renowned for generosity and care for those in need. Tradition tells of his secretly providing dowries for three poor sisters, the root of his association with gift-giving and the Santa Claus tradition. He is venerated as a patron of children, sailors, and pawnbrokers.
