Life
Peter Chanel was born in France in 1803 and became a priest of the Society of Mary, the Marists. In 1837 he sailed as a missionary to the Pacific island of Futuna, where in 1841 he was clubbed to death by warriors sent by the local king, becoming the protomartyr of Oceania. Within a short time of his death the whole island embraced Christianity, and he is venerated as patron of Oceania.
