Life

Bishop of Krakow renowned for his courage, Stanislaus rebuked and excommunicated King Boleslaus II for his cruelty and immoral conduct. In 1079 the king had him slain while he celebrated Mass, making him a martyr for the freedom of the Church. Canonized in 1253, he is the principal patron saint of Poland and is honored each April 11.
