Life
Sylvester I served as Bishop of Rome from 314 to 335, during the reign of Emperor Constantine, as Christianity emerged from persecution into imperial favor. His pontificate saw the construction of the great Roman basilicas, including Saint John Lateran and the original Saint Peter's. The Council of Nicaea met in 325 during his papacy, and he was among the first non-martyrs venerated as saints.
