Life
Thomas Becket served as chancellor of England before becoming Archbishop of Canterbury in 1162. After a prolonged conflict with King Henry II over the rights and freedoms of the Church, he was murdered in his cathedral by knights loyal to the king in 1170. He was canonized in 1173, and his shrine at Canterbury became one of the great pilgrimage destinations of medieval Europe.
