Joachim and Anne are venerated as the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary and thus the grandparents of Jesus. Though unnamed in the Gospels, they are honored in ancient tradition reaching back to the second-century Protoevangelium of James, and are beloved in both East and West. Fittingly named patrons of grandparents, the couple share a memorial on July 26.
