Feast
Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary
- Feast day
- May 31
Life
The Visitation commemorates Mary's journey to the hill country of Judea to visit her cousin Elizabeth, then carrying John the Baptist. At Mary's greeting the child leaped in Elizabeth's womb, and Elizabeth proclaimed Mary blessed among women. Mary responded with the Magnificat, her great hymn of praise recorded in the Gospel of Luke, and remained with Elizabeth about three months.
